Today I took my FJ in for its 5000 checkup, which made me think about how far I've come. Therefore, the stats so far...

starting mileage:   1,862

current mileage:    4,871

nights in hotel:       29 (too many cities!)

nights in tent:         16

best meal:             Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Dallas, TX

best culture:          Afghanistan exhibit, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, TX (for actual artifacts); Spiro Mounds, Fort Coffee, OK (for what I felt during the visit)

best nature:           it's a tie between the Dallas Arboretum, TX, and the Municipal Rose Garden, Tyler, TX (at least until I get to some serious hiking)

best shopping:      Crazy House Western, just outside Paris, TX (for finding my first pair of hot boots)

This afternoon I toured Blue Bell Creamery, which started here as The Brenham Creamery Company in 1907. There wasn't much to see, just a bunch of stainless steel tanks and equipment, but it was interesting to know that their daily milk requirement is from 50,000 cows. They say they try to get all their milk from within 200 miles, but I've not seen many cows nearby. Where are all these cows? Anyway, the tour included a scoop, so I was able to get some yummy black walnut. When I asked for it, all three girls behind the counter looked up, and one asked if I'd knew what black walnuts were. Yep, I said, my grandpa and dad really liked them, and I think my grandma might have made the ice cream at some point, so I come by it naturally. (Hey, Roger, do you like them?) APicked up yet another t-shirt. I have a feeling I'll end this trip with two hot pairs of boots, a full blog, tons of photos, and a lot of t-shirts and patches. I really should start collecting more people.
