I spent the afternoon off exit 6 in Joplin, Missouri. First stop, of course, was The Candy House. http://www.candyhouse.net/  I left with beautiful handmade chocolates: a bunny and giant marshmallow egg for Will & Jake, multi-dipped pretzel rods for mom, and three for myself (raspberry, mint and divinity). What self-discipline!

Just up the road is the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center. Only a year old, the building looks like a flat, ugly rock, but it's on purpose -- it's a Green building. See http://www.wildcatglades.audubon.org/greentechnology.html for details. They offer classes, a few natives in tanks, and a little gift shop. It was COLD, but I zipped up my jacket and roamed around the trails for 3 miles or so. I startled a blue heron on the bank below, but was able to use the zoom to catch it on the opposite bank. I can't remember ever seeing blue herons before, and they've become a talisman of the early part of my trip. This was a wonderful stop, and the trails are terrific; I would definitely be taking advantage of it often if I lived nearby! And I'd definitely be bringing Will & Jake the upcoming Bird Festival.

I had hoped to stop in Miami (pronounced "Miama") for the Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum, but they're closed on Sun-Mon. In fact, I missed several places in northeast OK because they're closed on these days. Therefore...

Marijka's Rules of Travel: #2:  Wherever you happen to be on Sunday and Monday, STAY PUT. Or, if necessary, travel to the next interesting place, but don't expect anything but fast food and chain stores along the way. Museums, monuments, diners, mom-n-pop stores and anything else that's truly interesting will be closed. Period.
