We had a pleasant flight to Singapore but we were dead with the heat as we were wearing
our jeans and trekking boots to save on luggage weight. On the bright side - at
15 Kg's, our backpacks were much easier to manage!! We stayed in a cheap and
cheerful hostel in Chinatown. The dorm was a bit cramped and had bed bugs in my
bed but it had free breakfast and it meant that we didn't stay around the
hostel doing nothing all day. The owner was really nice too, he works at the
museum in Chinatown and his father was a very famous photographer. He had
really interesting stories and took time to remember the names of everybody
that stayed here. If you're in Singapore on a budget I'd give it a try.
Singapore's
all about shopping!! Or on my budget, window shopping. There are massive shopping centres on every block - you
would need months to explore them all. We only had 3 days so we went to Orchard
road and had a look at some of the others near Chinatown.
While we were there, Tipperary was playing against Clare in the Hurling so we went to
the Irish pub, Molly Malone's, to watch it. Tipp won and there were loads of
Clare supporters there licking their wounds by the end of the night!
We went to Raffles Hotel to get the famous Singapore Sling, which was first created in
that hotel. At first I felt really out of place in my backpacker outfit of
shorts and a top but when we got to the bar I didn't feel so bad. People were
pretty dressed up there but the floor and tables, and every bit of available
space it seems, was covered in monkey nut shells that they give free with every
drink. The place looked disgusting and I would have left if we didn't want to
get the drink! We went inside with shells cracking under our feet. After a
minute we managed to get a seat outside which was much better and could enjoy
our drinks. They were about Euro 14 each which wasn't too bad and came in the
Singapore Sling glass for the phopographs!
Singapore's the cleanest city I've seen and there's lost of green spaces so, even though
there's a lot of high rise, it doesn't seem like a concrete paradise. One thing
that isn't good is the price of alcohol - it's much more expensive than back
home! It would have been nice to spend more time here but it was time to leave
South-East Asia and make our way to OZ!!!
