Koh Samui is such a beautiful island. We stayed in a hut by the beach in the main area of Chaweng Beach. The beach had beautiful white silky sand and the weather was fantastic. It's a very nice town until you wander off the main drag when it gets quite seedy - Simon had girls (I think...) trying to drag him into their bars as we tried to make our way to the Muay Thai (Thai Kick-Boxing) Stadium.
The Thai boxing matches were interesting, more so for the betting going on at the sidelines than the actual matches. I think it was a venue more for tourists though as there weren't many locals there.
There was a really good Irish bar called Tropical Murphy's which we got breakfast in everyday and sat reading the Irish newspapers for an hour or two. We came second in the pub quiz there, being narrowly beaten by the Dutch table!
Nothing much else to say about Samui - we just chilled out on the beach by the day and had food out at night. The only downside was that it was a bit more expensive than the other places we'd been in Thailand and it rained torrentially for about an hour every day. Luckily we were so close to the beach that we'd usually beat the shower. I'd definitely recommend Samui for a laid back holiday - good beach, good restaurants and bars and the locals are really friendly.
