Entry 17 of 44 | show all | print this entry

Ah, back in Bangkok. I wouldn't say we were exactly strutting or anything but after our travels around the rest of Asia we were well able for Bangkok this time. It seemed like a different place really. The tuk tuk drivers didn't bother us as much, we could walk past the stalls with relative ease and we were pretty tough with our bargaining skills! I've obviously perfected the leave me alone look (phrase calmed down to cater for all audiences!).

We spent two more days in Bangkok to recover from the expedition form Cambodia. We went to an Irish bar in Patpong and had some really nice food. While we were there a Thai Beetles tribute band came on. They were actually really good, almost note perfect. They even had the 60's outfits and haircuts! Unfortunately we had to leave to go to a "local show". A necessary if uncomfortable requirement if you're in this part of town. We went back to the Irish bar to get the end of their performance.

Needless to say patpong is a fairly dodgy area but The Better (Beetles tribute band) were the best part of our trip out there. Once they finished playing we decided to go back to our hostel. We grabbed a taxi outside and told him where we wanted to go. He drove for about 10 mins and tried to drop us off on some dark road that was nowhere where we asked to go!! He hadn't understood where we wanted to go and was giving out loads. He wanted more money than we'd agreed to bring us there but we were standing firm. So he takes off and drives up around the corner and pulls up. Makes us get out of the car and gets us another taxi going our way. The poor man was very upset indeed but we didn't pay him anything.

The next day we just relaxed. The Indiana Jones film was showing in a café near our hostel so we decided to go see that. It was obviously a knock-off and the sound quality was really bad. The subtitles weren't much help either! It was an ok way to spend the afternoon if it wasn't for the rat circling the edge of the room! After all the rats we saw in Hoi An I was actually used to rats and it didn't bother me as long as he stayed to the edges! That evening we were getting an overnight bus to Koh Tao
