Tanzania has been spared the internal strife that has blighted many African states.
Though it remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with many of its people living below the World Bank poverty line, it has had some success in wooing donors and investors.
Tanzania assumed its present form in 1964 after a merger between the mainland Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar, which had become independent the previous year.

MARIE: I loved Tanzania, but like many of the African countries we drove through, I wished we had more local experiences, rather than campgrounds and tourist spots.. even so I was able to meet and get to know locals in a small way! I stubbed my toe in Dar es Salaam, and will have a scar for life! A kind man let me use his bathroom to dress the wound... ah the pros and cons of open toed shoes.. if you are a natural klutz like me, open toes are probably not for you.
