A good friend of mine, who I met when I first moved to London over 12 years ago, grew up on the north side of the south island of New Zealand, in Takaka.  Maggie Reilly grew up among the cow fields, mountains and golden bay sea scapes of the area.

Her mum still lives in Takaka, and I met up with her one afternoon.  We shared a lovely lunch in town, then drove around the beautiful countryside.  Takaka has turned into a major tourist destination, which surprised me, as I understood it to be a small not-much-happening-here kind of town.  But the small town is located in the most spectacular valley, surrounded by mountains and ocean scapes.  The drive from Nelson (largest northern city before Takaka) to the town is memorable for its endlessly looping and long roads.. you have to have a strong stomach and a cool confidence behind the wheel to make it to the other side!

It was so nice to meet Maggie's mum, I always get a kick out of meeting the family of friends.  The nicest thing by far about this journey has been meeting wonderful people.  My friends' family and friends along the way have been tremendous.. especially here in New Zealand!  And New Zealanders in general are so hospitable and friendly.  The longer I'm here, the more I'm convinced it is the greatest country on earth!  (hahaha, I am nothing if not enthusiastic about the places I'm visiting!)  But really, New Zealand is amazing.

Maggie's mum reminded me of my Aunt Peg in that she's well into her 80's but you'd never guess it. There's a real spark and sparkle to her, we laughed a lot, and I can see where Maggie gets her humourous gene!

The north side of the south island has been my favourite part of New Zealand.  Bye for now.
