We left Santiago to get to our last country on the continent. As we passed over the Andes and the Amazon, we crossed the Equator. This was quite a significant event. For most of the last 4 months we had been in the southern hemisphere, and now we finally returned to the Northern half of the planet. I think we shall look back on out time 'down under' as the most adventurous and challenging part of our travels, but it was time to relax now and head towards home.
After the cold of Santiago, it was nice to get to the tropical heat of the Caribbean coast. By crossing the Equator, we have gone from winter to summer in an afternoon!
We had been warned by a few people that Venezuela and Caracas its capital is a very challenging place for travelers, with costs higher than most countries, and scamsters trying to rip off tourists. There are some amazing places in the country and most visitors go to the likes of Angel Falls, the Amazon and the mountains. But we chose to come here because after travelling for so long, we wanted to get some relaxation time on a beach. And due to the time of the year the southern parts of the continent is in winter, and most of the northern part is in hurricane season, so one of the few places to get good weather is just off the coast of Venezuela. We decided to not spent too much time in Caracas and head off to the islands, so we just had one night in Caracas, and spent it in a small hotel near the airport. Just to head into the centre of town costs about £35 each way!! So we decided to just explore the area near to us and stay in the safety of the hotel. Caracas is apparently one of the dodgiest cities on the planet...and as there was not much that we wanted to do in the centre, we opted to just chill out on the verandah of the hotel and have a few drinks, in preparation of our trip to Los Roques.
