Santiago is our 5th capital on the south american continent, and it is very different from the 4 others. High buildings, a lot of people with suits and ties, Mac Donalds, this capital looks a bit like an european one at the first glance. The fact that it is surrounded by 4000 meters snowscaped peaks, and that it has few little green mountains (cerros) in the center of the city where people can relax from the urban activity makes it a very pleasant city.
The buzz of the city is nice: some good museums, people playing music in the street or playing chess in the street, a lot of pedestrian streets and terraces, that is a short description of the city during the day.
We had planned of staying 4 days in Santiago but Pick pockets in the metro changed our plans ... all our passports and credit cards have gone ... May be Santiago wanted us to know it better ... So during 2 days we went deeply into the chilean administration and visited all the different centers in order to get 4 different papers necesarry to get some new passports. On the positive side of things, we have met people that we would not have met without this adventure: A nostalgic Pinochet supporter, a nice old man (former journalist who taught us a lot on the chilean history) and a frustated poet.
Despite our misadventure, we really liked Santiago, it is a city with a strong personality where it must be nice to live.
