Temple hopping in Siem Reap

On Thursday 6 am we got onto a boat on the Tonle Sap River from Battambang to Siem Reap.... 6 hours and 14 floating villages later- we arrive in Siem Reap filled with excitement for the 3 days that lay ahead were to be filled by visits to the ancient and exquisite temples, in particular- Angkor Wat. This is the reason Cambodia has been put on the map. millions of people enter the country every year to see these amazing wats. The thing that is so amazing about them Is the fact that they are so big, have so much detail, and are man made, and have lasted one so many years. They range from 720 AC to- well- I don't know really but they are just incredible.

Thursday morning we visited 3 temples: first up was Angkor Thom and the Bayon: this is the temple of 316 faces that face out into the jungle. Some faces are smiling and some are not. See pics below.

Those that are smiling represent the Gods and those that are not smiling represent demons. You wonder around the wat for an hour and really just skim the surface but enough to get a feel of what the wat is about. Took a cool pic -nose to nose- with one of the smiling Gods.

next was Banteauy Srei which was a wat containing the finest sculptures of all the wats.

Next was the Ta Prohm- this wat is a little different- also known as the tomb raider wat. This is where a few scenes from Tomb Raider(Angelina Jolie movie) was shot. The amazing thing about this wat is that they have allowed nature to just go on and do its thing. They have let the trees grow wild over the tombs and sculptures. I'm not sure if mypincs do it any justice t roots of trees were like 5-6 meters thick! And trees were just huge. It was beautiful- it was kind of like the trees were saying 'this is my land- and I will grow wherever I want to however I want to and whenever I want to) this was my favourite wat. So bugger off u humans and let me do my thing!

Friday morning was a 4:30am wake up- as we went to see Angkor wat at sunrise. This is the most spectacular and biggest wat. It took 50 years to build and is just unbelievable. Thousands of people flocked to the wat at 5am to witness te reflection of the wat on the more surrounding the wat. I won't bore you With details- it was huge, amazing, beautiful(except for the green scaffolding right in front of the wat which ruined most of my pics) you can see the pics below.

After a long day of Angkor wat hopping I went for an amazing of $7 massage. :) quite a tough life I know:)

Night was spent in Siem Reap - and wow- night life is like a small Thailand - so touristy but there were full n night clubs and people in Siem ripe are just so much more well off than in Pnom Penh.

Now off to the home stay.... Update to follow....
