We continued on our way east along the Ring Road with a detour to Dettifoss - the most powerful in Europe.  There are two roads to the falls and one is for 4 wheel drive only so we took the east road which was washboarded, bumpy and dusty...but we got there.  This waterfall is on the second largest river in Iceland and flows from the Vatnajökull icecap (third largest in the world after the north and south poles...) and flows into the Arctic Ocean.  Flooding from volcanic eruptions under the icecap formed the canyon which averages 100 meters deep by 500 meters wide.

Along the trail we stumbled across a Rock Ptarmigan mother with chicks.  They were scurrying along the rocks, mom peeping at her chicks.  After a while the chicks took refuge under mama...all 8 of them!

As powerful as Dettifoss is, further along the trail is another waterfall, Selfoss, that just amazed me!  It's only 11 meters high but very very wide...check it out:

After a while we headed back to the car and sustained ourselves through the bumpy ride with the knowledge that there was a small coffee shop near the highway that we had seen on the way in.  We not only had coffee, but a delicious apple pastry as well.  YUM!!!  And then...onwards.  Our plan was to get to Egilstašir and get a room for the night.  According to Lonely Planet, this city is drab even in a country where drab is the norm and we were a little apprehensive about what we might find there.  From our first look around town we both liked it and found a nice little place for the night.  We also found a state run liquor store and stocked up on some wine!  Then had a fantastic dinner at Cafe Nielson.  It was a bit pricey but oh my god was it good!!! I had reindeer in a blueberry sauce...delicious!
