Jack and I spent a relaxing week in a vacation cottage on the island of Vlieland.  I met Jack in Utrecht and from there we took the train to Harlingen where we caught the ferry to Vlieland.  It was a wild ride over there!  Once on the island we arranged for our bags to be brought to the cottage and we picked up our rental bikes.  we picked up a few groceries and headed to our cozy cottage.

About 1100 people live on this small island and there is only one small town.   The village thrived in the 17th -19th centuries as it was convenient to the shipping routes to the colonies.  Now the major industry is tourism and in addition to a couple of hotels and campgrounds, the island is dotted with vacation cottages.  We spent our days biking, hiking, looking for birds, and relaxing. The village is very quaint with some beautiful old buildings.  There are quite a few really excellent restaurants but my favorite was one in the old church rectory.  The woman who runs it has a great personality and is very warm and welcoming.  She has a set menu every evening which a glass on wine especially selected for each course.  Eating out in Holland is never cheap and this place was pricier than most...but well worth it.

Many years earlier I had been in Amsterdam and my Uncle Peter asked me if I wanted to go to Wine and Fucking.  Huh?  Turns out Wijnand Fockink is a distillery that has been making gin since 1679. Since 1993 it has been operating as a tasting room for flavored liqueurs. Most of the
interior remains in its original state, and the my uncle introduced me to the traditional way to drink form the low bar.  The glass is filled to the brim with the chosen liqueur and you lean over and slurp from the glass. On a day trip to Amsterdam I managed to find the place and Jack and I each had a couple of drinks in honor of my uncle.
