We left Mumbai at 6am for the town of Ganpatipule on the Konkan coast about 375kms south of Mumbai. It turned out to be a 13hr journey. We stayed overnight in a basic hotel and headed down the coast to Vagator on the coast the next day. The terrain was interesting, we followed the forested Western Ghats followed by contoured terraces and rice paddy fields. As we neared Vagator on the Arabian Sea, white washed Catholic Church's from the Portuguese era and coconut palms came into view.
Goa is very tropical and lush, reminds me of PNG and Darwin. We are staying at a guest house called the "julie jolly" complete with a pool and bar. We had dinner at a "Greek restaurant" a welcome change from curry.
Vagator is overrated as far as beaches go. A small community of old weathered looking hippies live here, 'relics' from the 1960's and 70's  still zooming around on their scooters and motorbikes.

I bet the jolly julie was very welcome. I received an email from Mum yesterday so their computer must be up and running again. everyone has gone home from Tomkys St but Matthew has been diagnosed as having coeliac disease apparently and may have to go on a special diet (gluten free?) and he has lost his job because of too much time off for sickness. love the old colonial homes - the british had it made didn't they, with servants, etc. mum has heard about Tony missing the train (from wendy) so it would appear to be a popular story. take care.
