We are now at Jaisalmer where there is a fantastic medieval yellow sandstone old Fort and a royal palace. Jaiisalmer was once on the camel trade route between India and Central Asia. Pakistan is approx 60kms away to the west. The Forts architecture is quite fairytale with its beautiful carved stone doorways, screens, balconies and turrets. We hired a guide and spent the morning exploring the narrow streets and alleyways.
We then headed out to the Thar desert by jeep for our camel safari and night in the open sand-dunes. (No tents, just sleeping bags)
The terrain was desolate with a bit of scrub, a few scattered villages with their mudbrick homes and believe or not wind turbines. My camels name was Johnnie and he was the best. I had a liitle gypsy boy called Allie on the back. We had a wonderful night with a campfire and a full moon and it was so quiet apart from a few wild dogs, dung beetles and the odd scorpion or two scurrying around.
