A visit to Visby is like a step back in time...and this weekend many of the residents decided to take that step in costume!  Each year they have a Medieval Festival.  While our trip was quite spontaneous we were rewarded with some wonderful activities and photo opportunities.

You actually find a different view when everyone around you is wearing different clothing, cooking food over open fires and celebrating a culture long gone.

Of course the setting couldn't be more perfect.  A walled city with church ruins dating back to the 1100.  There were cobblestone streets and guard towers everywhere we looked.

If you are in Sweden a trip to Visby should be on your list (after you've seen all of wonderful Stockholm)! You really will feel like you have stepped back in time. Here's a short entry from their website.

Visby is a walled town with roses, ruins, narrow cobblestone streets, a wide range of cozy restaurants and pubs, markets and of course the preserved town wall itself: Visby was once a Hanseatic town in Sweden. The Hansa ruled Gotland for hundreds of years during the Medieval Times, today it's a popular destination for tourists.  Discover the beauty of this medieval town in Sweden.

The town of Visby in Sweden was in 1995 chosen by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. The Medieval Week on Gotland is a medieval history event with thousands of participants. Medeltidsveckan is one of many big medieval events in Europe.
