To get from San Salvadoe to Lago Coatepeque was a wee mission. it was a local bus to the bus station and then a bus to Santa Anna and from there it was another bus to the remote and quiet Lago Coatepeque .. Lago means lake by the way. Anyway this place was stunning and towering over the lake was the volcano of cerro verde. The lake area was very quiet but we spent some time exploring the area and had dinner in a local place... kind of place with dogs in the kitchen and rats in the eating area... but nothing too unusual about that to be honest and these places always serve the best stuff. Our next day was more fun bus trips and connections all the way to Cerro Verde national park.

We had set our mind on climbing Volcan Izalco a towering cone shaped volcano with no vegetation on it. It last errupted in 1966 and steam still oozes out of the crater at its apex. What was interesting about this trip was .. well you get a guide but as well as the guide you have two armed police officers escort the tour group as well.. should mention there are only 6 people on this walk so it all seened a bit extreme. Cerro Verdo was the first volcano where we started from anddecended into a valley before a massive steep climb up Izalco to the crater. the views from the top were stunning and you can cleary see where the lava flows have destroyed everything in their way, the earth is black rock and nothing grows. The desent was so much fun, its like skiing on two feet all the way down, the rocks and dirt swallow ur feet as you glide in a cloud of dust down the volcano.

Definitly a highlight of El Salvador and a world away from its dirty capitol. It was back to the hotel Torrmelinos for a quiet nite in the restaurant and a view over the lake.
