After leaving chichi it was the mother of all detours to get to Flores and Tikal. so via Antigua and Guatemala city we finally made it to Flores about 5.30 in the morning and myself and Hartie checked into the first hotel we could get and got a kip. Anyway from here we took a good look around Flores and Santa Elena. Flores is an island in the middle of a lake but it is connected to the mainland by a bridge so its not far to walk and flores is pretty small too. Its a bit of a tourist trap and a little more expensive but it is the gateway to Tikal where there are massive ancient Maya ruins.
Following morning it was up at 6 and off to the ruins of Tikal which are an hours drive north into the middle of dense jungle. After seeing Angkor Wat and Bagan in Asia these temples are equally as impressive and some of them just tower above dense green jungle amid howler monkeys. The history is a bit vaugue on when they were built exactly and how many people lived there but it really was facinating. From tikal it was back in to Flores for more quality food and the following morning it was time for me to head on to Belize and Hartie was heading for another part of Guatemala.
