leaving my prison stint and napier behind i headed on route 5 for taupo.. its a nice drive and took me about 2 hours. i wasnt sure what to expect in taupo as i didnt know alot about it.. it holds lake taupo which is the largest lake in the country and there are several national parks dotted about beside the town. its also one of the biggest sky diving centres in the world and they have several other adventure sports here in a copy of queenstown. anyway off i went tramping with an american couple i met in burkes backpackers where i was stayin. we headed out to huka falls and the craters of the moon. the falls were pretty impressive and the water in the river is so clean as usual. this whole area is full of thermal springs so steam can be seen in several places as little tributaries hit the river. the craters of the moon is a few km further walk ahead and although it was kind of difficult to make out what is going on there it was pretty impressive. it is a large area with hundreds of little craters caused by thermal springs. the water and mud which is there bubbles away and steam that looks like smoke blows over the whole area..
back in town then i took a good walk around and chilled out by the lake for a bit. taupo is very much a tourist town and a couple of days here was nice. it was back on the road again for tongario national park and wanganui further to the south.
