Took me a few hours to drive north to the fox glacier.. loving driving in this country its just so much to see en-route.. and i have to keep stopping to take photos.. typical tourist.. but its not like ur holding up traffic cos there is hardly another car on the road.. The road follows a lot of the cliffs looking over the Tasman sea and through valleys and gorges of the Alps. When i got in to Fox glacier township i headed straight into the national park area where the Glacier is.. As i got there i met Dave louise and Dimitri who had been in Haast a day earlier. So we went straight past the safety ropes and warning signs and up to the glacier face.... This would be where the old travel insurance would come into question.. when u start messing about on glaciers.. Anyway this Glacier is just one massive chunk of Ice thats nearly 500 metres thick in places and over 13km in lengh up the valley between the mountains.. its so hard to understand how large it is until you are right next to it. Huge bolders of ice fall regulary off the face of the glacier and fall into the river that flows from a cave in the glacier.. its nuts.. There are alot of walking tours and helicopter trips you can do on the glaciers and they are not cheap but the four of us looked into some of the trips to do at Franz josef glacier about 25km up the road.. From here i drove out to a scenic look out point where you can see the glacier the alps and Mt cook in the background.. bit of poxy cloud there but i still had good views.. On the road again .. twisting roads and on to the Franz josef glacier township..
