Arrived in Bangkok on sunday the 20th with Air Asia, Had me nice emergency exit seat on the flight and ended up sitting beside a couple from Bangor who gave me some good info on Bangkok. Anyway taxi drivers in Bangkok are even bigger gangsters than they are at home so got one eventually to Sukhumvit area in bangkok where i was booked to stay. Road rules dont seem to matter much in thailand and they are completley nuts on the road.
Anyway at me hostel i met jamie from Australia and Nick from the states. So we headed to MBK which is this massive shopping mall... got lost in the poxy place everytime i was in there but you can buy anything there cheap as chips. First nite out went looking to find an irish bar to watch the All Ireland football final, Kerry and Mayo. Typical plastic irish bars, seen as they didnt have it on and were showing poxy soccer. So that nite we hit a few pool bars after the football. Walking into the bars the local girls are up to you straight away bumping into you and all friendly.. Grand Palace
Grand Palace
. And im thinkin... yep still got it.... lol but these birds are all Hookers. The basic rule is dont make eye contact with them or buy them drinks and ur grand or as my brother says at the family meal before going away make sure you do the old mick dundee test on anyone suspicious and in fairness you do pass plenty of ladyboys and these are just the ones you can spot easy...adams apples and all that jazz.
Anyway ended up finding a pretty decent pool bar with a rake of tables and myself and the two lads had a great couple of nites out there.
While in bangkok took in the city sites and smells. you gotta step over rubbish and maingy dogs on every street corner. The grand palace was beautiful and checked out a couple of Buddahs and temples. Took this wicked boat taxi thing on a canal too, we were the only tourists on it, the canal stank of swerage and who knows what else. on the canal ur passing by shanty towns and then a 5 star hotel. there is no real planning in the city and everything is just thrown up beside eachother.
Am in the pool bar and CNN news is on the big screen showing tanks and soilders and on about this Coup. In thailand there was no news on it because the national tv stations cant show it and could only show photos of the royal family and play patriotic music. No mention of it in the newspapers either. Then CNN was shut down and the reason was that the Sun damaged the satellite even though this was about mid-night and aint no sun out. So lots of propaganga goes on here. Was playing pool with a bunch of teachers who teach in an international school in Bangkok and they were delighted that the coup was on cos they would get a day off work. so im thinking yea coup isnt really anything to worry about so. And sure enough the next day everything shut schools and banks etc. Myself and the lads thought this was great craic geting the photos with the army boys and tanks.
