730km is an absolute breeze on the high speed trains in China although we did have to sit on our bags for 4 of the 5 hours on the train. China's cities just seem to roll into eachother between massive farmland and Industrial power plants which leaves a permanent haze over the land.
Once in Qingdao it was an easy taxi ride to the hostel and a welcome free beer in the bar. After dinner it was out in search of Beer street.. Thats right a street called Beer street with about 60 bars and more importantly the Tsingtao Brewery which keeps all the local establishments stocked with the fresh stuff. The restaurant bars on beer st werent great but it was so funny to see the Chinese drunk.. They really cant drink much booze and fall all over the place drunk... How they get into that state i have to idea and in certain places you have to manouver your way around fresh puke on the foot path. But we did find a cool little place across the street from the hostel which had their kegs lined up on the foot path and literally just served on the side of the road as you sit on plastic stools watching the traffic fly by Qingdao
Qingdao
.
We took in the beaches of the city, the city is an old German colony and it has a stark contrast between German and Chinese style in the city which makes it really unique as a China city. Down along the coast we visited the Aquarium which was tiny and a bit of a con. A theatre in the distance looked like Sydney Opera house but it was falling apart. But the city still had a load of charms and defintly warranted a few days. Our second day in the city and it was off on a tour of the Tsingtao Brewery which turned out to be really good and gave a great history of the German influence in the city and how it became a famous city. Free beer and peanuts went down very well along the tour and as well as polishing off our own pitchers of beer at the end of the tour we polished off other Chinese tourists pitchers who couldnt manage to finish them. Sin to let it go to waste.. Beer street where the brewery is located is lined with beer barrels for bins and giant bottles for seats along with numerous statues of beer....lol... It was back then to our local bar across the road where the price of beer was ridiculously cheap and dinner consisted of as many skewered meats as we wanted... What was funny about this bar and many others in town was that they sold take away beer by the bag..... lol.. Yea they keep filling a plastic bag full of beer to a certain weight and then charge you accordingly.... we were in stitches laughin at blokes walking up and down the streets with plastic bags filled with beer... where else would you get it.
Next stop Shangai...............
