Hervey Bay
I arrived in Hervey Bay and found the beaches to be quite beautiful. I'd been to Hervey Bay before, many years ago, when we bought a group of school kids up here to go to Fraser Island for school camp. It was as I remembered, although much more developed for tourists now. Because I'd done a tour of the island before, I opted to spend a day walking the beach and the 1000m jetty. The tidal movement in the area is significant and on that day, large sandbars had appeared which were home to many thousands of crabs, moving from the shore lines with army precision. Watching them was strangely fascinating as they worked their way to higher ground.
Another day was spent driving back up the coast to Bundaberg. I went on a tour of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and for my $25, got to sample a couple of their finest drops as well as learn all about the history and process of creating the great Aussie traditional rum. The amount of alcohol this distillery creates and the money it generates is astounding.
I had the time and my beloved car was in serious need of a wash to get rid of all the red dirt from the Territory and the millions of suicidal insects, so I treated the Suby to the longest wash it's ever had!
If it wasn't for the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on, I would have enjoyed my stay at Hervey Bay.
