Hughenden
On the way to Hughenden I stopped off for lunch and a visit to Kronosaurus Korner Fossil Centre in a small town called Richmond. Richmond is known as the fossil capital of Australia as is has over 400 exhibits. It is well known for having Australia's best vertebrate fossils and one of the best pilosaur skeletons, over 100 million years old. The display is primarily dedicated to displaying marine reptiles. I watched a short film which gave an introduction to life during the Cretaceous Period, then wandered around the exhibits with the aide of a hand held audio guide. About 100 million years ago much of central Queensland and parts of New South Wales and South Australia were covered by a shallow inland sea. This area is now called the Great Artesian Basin. The exhibits were interesting and it's amazing to think they are still intact after such a time.
Hughenden is also known as dinosaur country and was only 112km from Richmond. I stopped over in the Royal Hotel Resort, had a brilliant dinner from the pub served in my room and watched a game of footy on television. A nice end to a long day of driving
