Carnarvon
Carnarvon was really just a stopover as a half way point from Monkey Mia to Coral Bay. I didn't find Carnarvon a very interesting place. In fact there wasn't much to see and do. I did check out one of the longest jetties in WA, the One Mile Jetty. Much of the jetty was over scrub land before you even reached the ocean. It wasn't particular impressive.
I drove out amongst the banana plantations on the way to Carnarvon's OTC dish which was built in conjunction with NASA in 1966 as a satellite communications and tracking station. The station was involved in the Gemini and Apollo space missions. The dish is 29.6 metres in diameter. Although no longer used the dish still stands as a reminder of days gone by when Carnarvon participated in the space race to put a man on the moon. It was from here that Australia received its first satellite television broadcast. The station closed after assisting in tracking Halley's Comet in 1987.
Apparently Carnarvon supplies 70% of WA's winter vegetable requirements, producing over 30,000 tones of fruit and vegetables every year.
Couldn't wait to get moving from here. Coral Bay was whispering my name.
