After a few days with Nate and Allison in Anchorage, Nels was ready to get back to his normal routine in Soldotna. Carla drove us all in their monster truck (which they drove up because it would be more spacious for Nels). It was a stunning drive. Alaska is as imagined, a place full of drama and beauty. Carla made a short detour for us to see some of the local Glaciers. Portage Lake used to be a glacier itself, but over the years it has receded further and further back. What was once one glacier now is 5, receding back into their respective valleys. There was an informative little tourist information centre at the lake, which was built in the 80's, with a viewing platform, where you could see the glacier at the edge of the lake, now it has receded to far back to be seen and a boat trip across the lake is necessary to visit it. However, there are some glacial icebergs in the lake, which we enjoyed.
