When I was 4 years old we had an exchange student called Mercedita from Puerto Rico come and stay with us for a year in Bangor. Even though I was only 4 she made lasting memories on me and our family and we have kept in touch and visited at various times ever since. These pictures are Marcelo and I visiting with her family in Miami.
Mercedita's husband is Rolando from Cuba, and their two children are Gigi and Rolito. Rolando is a science professor. Rolio is only 7 but sch an intelligent little boy, always reading science books and now thick novels. Gigi 4 is a fun loving little girl, who loves to be active and interact with people. Mercedita is such a great mother, and has even learned how to cook and bake (a big change from when she stayed with us) maybe I should get the hint and do that too.

We went to the beach and had some fun times there, visited the Everglades (you know Floirda now known as Orange County, used to be known as Mosquito County) well the Everglades as well as having lots of Aligators had an ample supply of mosquitos, several times we were chased out of the undergrowth by clouds of them. Despite insect repellant myself and Gig were hit the worst, poor Gigi had bites on her face, and her teachers said to Mercedita, what did you do to the child! I tell you honestly, there was nothing you could do to prepare yourself for that kind of onslaught.
Though I don't have picture of it, we visited Rolando's parents a few times and they are such lovely people. Full of fantastic stories about escaping from Cuba. They should really write a book about their experiences.

Marcelo and Rolito quickly formed a friendship and Rolito made up a game called DESROY! Where he wold try to attack Marcelo with a sword. Marcelo, being a big kid himself had lots of fun with this.

We so enjoyed our stay at Mercedita's house, her family I consider as family.
