Thought I'd visit Tangier today, but blame a mix of insomnia, sleeping pills, waking up late and delayed Spanish transit. I didn't make it. I got to the port only to find out that the only ferries available would give me maybe a total of 1 hour in Tangier before the final return ferry. For a total cost of maybe 66 euros it didn't seem worth it. I hung out in the port, had a beer and looked at the mix of Moroccans and Spaniards coming to and fro.
I could have gone to Ceuta but what was the point? Ceuta is a Spanish town across from Gibraltar (roughly) and would have given me no sense of Moroccan culture. I decided to count this as a travel failure.
I walked out the port and took a cab into downtown Algeciras. Nothing. A Sunday in a Spanish port city is depressing. I walked up the Plaza Alta and only saw closed storefronts and the occasional homeless person asking me for a euro. No restaurants to sample cuisine or bars open for a cold cerveza on a hot day. I suggest never going to Algeciras unless you are using it for a departure point across the strait. It would definitely have made more sense to stay in Tarifa which is a town with something to do aside from the fact it also runs a fast ferry (35 mins) to Tangier. I liken staying in Algeciras to maybe spending time in San Pedro.
I walked to the bus station and took the local line back to the Hotel Alboran. I had a few glasses of wine, ate some cheese and bread and melon. Went to sleep early in order to catch a 6:30am bus to Sevilla.
