Friday 15th August

We were running low on our supplies of food and water so we really had to get going this morning.  We drove back down to Winthrop and had another little ice-cream each before doing some food shopping etc.

We drove on along highway 20 which took us high up into the mountains of the North Cascades. We had been told that this was spectacular and it was!  Once again only the photos can give you an idea of what it is like, short of actually coming here yourselves! (which you should if you can).

It is a National park now, so it is preserved in its natural state for us all to come and see.  The road running though it was only built in the early 1970's, so before that it was impossible to cross these great mountains Glacial lake

We drove past an amazing lake called Ross Lake which has glacial water in it which gives it the most incredible turquoise colour (from the minerals it has deposited in it).

We eventually arrived at Newhalem which is half way through the NP. We found a National Forest Service Campground which was not full and had great sites well priced at $12 so as we were starving hungry we finally stopped and had lunch!

We then spent the afternoon exploring, wandering along a trail down to the river and also biking up a half mile to the visitors Centre.

It was about 100 degrees F so we were very hot.  We had dinner and tried to cool off a bit before going to bed. (There is no electricity in NFS camp grounds so we couldn't use the air con.
