It had been the plan to catch the 8 am ferry but we missed it by a few minutes - it took longer than we expected to drive the 10 miles or so to the ferry terminal. Driving in a new city is always hard but at least it was a Saturday morning and the traffic wasn't too bad.
We had to wait until 9:45 for the next boat so we wandered across to look at an old WW2 warship moored nearby. A guy on the ship invited us aboard and showed as around the deck. The ship was the Salem built in Boston in 1945 and maintained by volunteers - from memory it was a Cruiser, gun ship? (it certainly had plenty of guns on deck) we looked in the forward gun turret which was interesting.
Then we jumped on the ferry and had a fantastic trip across the beautiful harbour - we stopped at a couple of Islands on the way and at the International Airport. It was fun to see the city from the water. The ferry dropped us off right in the heart of the city and we walked into town to see the sites and do some shopping.
We saw - Quincy Market, Boston common, Beacon Hill etc - quite a hike and it was quite warm. We watched some excellent street performers. We went to "Cheers" the famous bar for a beer and then back to the waterfront where a free Jazz concert was underway so we sat on the grass and joined in. Boston has a lovely feel and was friendly.
We took the ferry back to Indy then drove back to the campsite where we were invited to an evening meal with Robert, Cynthia and the kids. After dinner the kids watched a DVD while we chatted as the rain came down. Once it cleared up we sat around the fire and chatted again until quite late.
