We had to get up at 5.30 to make the train we wanted. The freezing cold showers did a good job waking us all. We were away by 6.30 as we didn't know how easy it would be to park and where we would get the tickets from etc.
We got the only spot in the car park that was suitable for our van, and that was because someone had just that minute driven out! Otherwise we would have been in big trouble.
The train was already there but we just had to wait until the doors opened to climb on. We left on time at 7.15 and we were off to New York via Newark where we had to change trains. It was about an hour and a half trip as it stopped at all the little stations on the way
When we got to New York Penn we bought our "One day multi-trip Metro passes" and hit the Subway! We found it easy to use and not dangerous. It was the same as using the underground in London.
Steve and Holly had written a list of the things they wanted to see in Manhattan so we planned our route around the list. First up was Central Park. We saw some tourists all taking photos of a building that was obviously of great significance. When we asked them we learned that it was the building where John Lennon had his home and where he was shot. This was right on the corner of Central Park so we walked through to see the Front of the Zoo where they based the movie Madagascar. We also went to the ice rink (no ice on it though). we looked at the lake etc
Then we walked to fifth Ave and had a look at all the shops, the Trump Tower, Disney store etc and then we took the subway to The Empire State building. We took the kids inside but we didn't go up it as it was expensive, unfortunately.
We headed for Brooklyn Bridge which we walked onto in the hot sun - a NY experience
We had Burger King for dinner and the subway back to New York Penn Station then train to New Jersey Penn station and then the slow train back to Indy. We didn't get back to the campsite until around 9 pm.
We had all had a great day and we had managed to see everything that we had planned to. New York in one day - quite a feat.
