Tuesday 3rd June

We got going early as we had a big drive today. We were heading for a small town called Midway, near Lexington, Kentucky where some good friends of Caroline's family live. The main reason for dashing up here was that Caroline's parents had arrived there yesterday for a 10 day holiday. By co-incidence we happened to be with in striking distance so we thought it would be fun to meet up.

We stopped for breakfast where we had a call from Nadine (Caroline's Sister) who also happens to be in the States in Vegas! She was ringing because she was worried about the weather forecast for the area which we were heading into.

We continued on through the lush green countryside of Kentucky, through beautiful farms and stables until we reached the town of Midway. The countryside has really changed now - it is very green with plenty of trees, lovely homes and well fenced land. The cicadas are very noisy - so loud in fact that Steve thought that a window must be open in the Van and the noise he could hear was the wind through the insect screen as we were driving along at 55 miles an hour, when in actual fact it was the cicadas in the trees. We later learnt that these cicadas were the "15 year cicada". They spend 15 years living in holes in the ground and when the conditions are right every 15 years or so they come out to mate then they die.

We arrived at Harry and Kitty's at about 5pm to an emotional and excited welcome. We parked up the driveway of their lovely house connected to mains power and had a very welcome swim in a beautiful pool. It was very hot and humid and the kids had a great time in the water.

We had a BBQ dinner together and a great night's sleep despite the heat - it helped to cool off in the pool before we went to bed . We opted not to run the Air-conditioner in case it blew the fuses.
