Sunday 25th May

We drove to Durango, Colorado this morning, after a small drama with Zach. He was playing with a broken glass bottle (that he had found in the dirt) so you can imagine what happened next....tears, blood, savlon cream, plasters etc and then the usual lectures on what happens if you find broken glass! A good lesson learned by Zach and Holly.

We arrived in Durango in the middle of an annual bike race. It was really exciting and there was a lot happening. The town is lovely with some old Victorian hotels, an old railway station with real working steam trains that you can take day trips into the mountains on, and a great ice cream parlour! Yes we did have some ice-cream and it was yummy.

We went out to the visitors centre which is just outside the town and got some info that we needed and discovered a cycle path that runs along the river for miles. We decided to hop on our bikes and ride along it for a bit. It was very interesting because there were lots of people rafting on the river which was fun to watch.
On the way back we found a fairground that was having a kids horse competition so we stopped and watched that for a while so the kids could see something a bit different. It was like something out of a movie with women with big curly hair wearing cowboy hats, tight , waist - high jeans with big gold belt buckles, checked shirts and cowboy boots. Unreal!

We then headed to the local pool so we could have a swim and a shower! It was a fantastic pool with slides, a whirlpool lap pool fountains etc we only had half an hour but it was enough time to have a bit of fun and then have a nice shower and wash our hair!

We found a spot in a national forest camp site to park over night - we couldn't find a free spot unfortunately but never mind, it was quiet at least!
