We awoke to a stormy looking morning and nearly didn't go anywhere but we decided that we had better not waste time so we continued eastwards. We were going close-by Capital Reef National Park so we stopped and checked out the Visitor Centre and visited a little settlement called Fruita. Here we looked in at an old homestead originally owned by the Gifford family (Mormons), visited the original old school and saw some amazing 1000 year old Petraglyphs. The petraglyphs were drawn by the Anasazi Indians and were depictions of animals (deer etc) and human like figures. Some were patterns - zig-zags and spirals. We continued on a very interesting scenic desert road through towering red sandstone cliffs and huge gorges. It started to rain very heavily, which is rare for the area as it only gets about 5 inches (100 - 120 mm) of rain a year. The rain made the area even more interesting as it created little waterfalls and we saw the completely dry river beds start to fill with water.
We eventually stopped at a view point area overlooking the Colorado river 100's of feet below. Another couple in a smaller RV had stopped also and we decided to overnight at the spot. The rain stopped and we had a quiet and cooler nights sleep. More thumbnails ...
