Saturday 17th May
This morning we woke and drove 100 miles or so to the Grand Canyon! As you are driving towards the National park, on completely flat countryside, it seems like you must be in the wrong place but soon we entered the Park and stopped in a lovely but huge campsite. We immediately cycled up to the rim to see the view ... and what a view it was. Quite inspiring and utterly too big for photographs. The canyon is in some places 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep - all cut out by the Colorado river over 5 or 6 million years or so. The rocks at the bottom are 2 billion years old!
The view tired us out so much we cycled back to Indy for Lunch and a rest. We did the laundry and tidied up, had an early dinner and cycled back to see the beautiful shadows in the canyon as the sun set. There are great cycle paths in the Park which we made the most of. We hit the hay early exhausted.
