...suddenly they were before us, galloping away along the escarpment of the Ijusuthi valley....what words can describe this moment? Majestic, Magical, Mystical...I now understand why the San used to honour the Eland in a special manner. Seeing them so suddenly on our hike through the Drakensberg installed a great sense of awe in me and is a memory that I will cherish for a very long time. I am thankful for this meeting of spirits.

This was our second day in the Berg. After three days of solid rain along the Gardenroute, some truly stunning days on the Wild Coast (along Coffee Bay and in Bulungula Lodge)and a loving weekend at Gerds' in Durban we were now in the highest mountains of South Africa - and TOTALLY LOST! 'Great, it is only week two and we have (despite the GPS) no idea where we are....lost on very high, very cold and very dangerous mountains.....good going!' We scrambled over grassy plateaus; avoiding the mountain's edge...I kept on telling myself that this is all part of the adventure, and that adventure was after all what I had set out to experience. I guess you can't order these things in degrees...as in.....you know... could I have just a little adventure please. But after a good hour and some re-navigation we finally hit our route again and safely headed down the mountain much richer for the true, wild beauty we had seen!
