We caught the 9am bus to Dar es Salaam and arrived at about 4pm at a bus station on the outskirts of town. We bargained a taxi driver from 20,000 down to 12,000 TSh (should be about 10,000 Tsh/5 pounds) to take us into town. nearly forgot to mention that they put on an English Language DVD and it was the cheesiest chimp movies ever... and Karl laughed all the way through! I have now found his level of wit!!!!
We went to a couple of hotels that were full and then the touts started being really pushy and saying everywhere was full and cheapest prices were about 55 US Dollars for a room. We really should learn to call ahead and book rooms, but since we have been travelling out of the tourist season we have not really had to worry about it before! Thankfully someone said that we could have one of the rooms they were holding at the Safari inn (24,000 TSH /12 pounds).
I was a little worried about walking around Dar es Salaam since we heard about thefts etc in the town. We tried to navigate around town, but ended up getting lost and going back to a bar near our hotel - Protein Pub on Chagga street for a few drinks to relax before a cheap buffet dinner at Chefs Pride. We found out later that due to the large number of muslims here that the Protein Pub is the only pub in downtown Dar!
The next day we decided to get the boat across to Zanzibar - after finding out that the Egypt air office had closed 3 years ago and therefore we would have to wait until Nairobi to find out if we can change our homeward tickets to allow us to spend some time relaxing on a beach in Egypt before heading home.
