We arrived at sunrise in Ernakulum and had to get a tuk tuk to the jetty to get the boat across to Fort Cochin.Once we arrived the other side we started walking.... since in the lonely planet the hotel did not look very far from the jetty. After about 1 km carrying our packs in the humidity we stopped and Karl went looking at the available hotels. In the meantime a couple of people stopped and asked if I was looking for somewhere to stay. In the end we went to the Citadel homestay which was great as it had a large room with fan ( and mosquito nets on windows) and outside there was a veranda with tv, sofa, fan and free drinking water and all for 250rps a night. You can't get better than that!!!!
Fort Cochin /Kochi is set up for tourists with many souvenier shops and restaurants etc.
It is a really quiet relaxing place by the sea where you can look at chinese fishing nets (and buy the fish), the palace (which wasn't very exciting), the synagogue (which was closed), the basilica (which was lovely) and the church (which was nothing special)
We have ended up staying longer than expected as Sat night at 10pm some guys came into our homestay and said they wanted some actors for the day to shoot a promotional video for an software company. We delayed our kerela backwaters trip and decided to go... well it was 1000rps/13 pounds for the days "work".
Karl was the main star of the show - as the boss in a boardroom nodding and smiling, while the back of my shoulder was in another shot...we spent most of the day sitting around wondering what was going on ... at least we were fed and watered, but were a little gutted it wasn't as glamourous as a bollywood film... and will probably be cut out of the shot in the end... we will never know..
We went on the backwaters trip on Tuesday... which is supposidly one of the things you should do before you die... due to the low water we couldn't go into a small boat and up the small canals so just stayed in the big river, which wasn't particularly exciting for 500 rps/7 pounds, but we can say we have done it.
I cant believe that I am covered in bites... unfortunately we think it is flees - although there are millions and millions and millions of mosquitos about.... deet, coils and rooms spray are being used and malaria tablets are not being forgotten!!!!
