We are certainly not in the highlands anymore. I was starting to think that Guatemala was a pretty mild-temperature country. I was wrong.
Yesterday morning, we took a bus out here to Flores with our Dutch friends, Natasha and Arend. We arrived here in the early afternoon sun, and were immediately drenched with sweat. Iīm not sure how hot is here, but I also donīt understand the Celsius system, so it wouldnīt matter much if I knew. Itīs gotta be at least 95F though. Why do Americans have to be different and use Fahrenheit and feet and miles, when the rest of the world uses the metric system? Now I donīt understand any measures when I go to foreign countries.
We got a room in an excellent hostel, Los Amigos. The rooms are clean (and hot) and thereīs a nice courtyard with hammocks, parrots, and a restaurant with great food.
Flores is a tiny island (or peninsula really) town. Thereīs not much to do here except sweat and relax. The lake is beautiful. I havenīt gone swimming yet, but we hear thereīs an excellent beach across the lake that a boat (lancha) will take you to. We might take advantage of that. Or we might just sweat in hammocks. Weīll certainly sweat whatever we do.
We took our first tuk tuk ride yesterday back into Santa Elena. Flores is connected to Santa Elena by a narrow strip, and it would only take five minutes to walk it, but we hadnīt ridden in a tuk tuk yet, so we indulged ourselves. (The tuk tuks are the little three-wheel taxis that run around everywhere in Guate)
Today, we are relaxing. And sweating. Always sweating. Tomorrow, and possibly the next day too, we are headed to check out the marvels of Tikal. We might rent hammocks and sleep there. After that, itīs southward to Río Dulce and Livingston, where we sill hopefully meet up with some friends from language school.
