Ranakpur and Jodpur
Entry 5 of 52 | show all | print this entry |
From the magic lakes of Udapur we headed north to Jodphur, stopping at a place called Ranakpur along the way. Ranakpur is where one of the largest Jain temples is and we were both really impressed with it, from the inside (1,444 marble pillars, each one individual in style) and the outside. So far the best site for us and a welcome break from the mad streets of being in a city. We were blessed by a priest inside, but as we have learnt in India, nothing is for free! This cost us 100Rs "donation"!
From Ranakpur we headed up to Jodphur and spent just over a day here which was enough. The streets were packed with cows and stank! We were having to avoid cow poo on every street we turned! The highlight here was the Fort which was pretty impressive and our gust house sat just outside the fort walls so we had some great views. Another highlight would have been a park with some old temples but from the moment we set foot inside we found a new "friend" who followed us everywhere we went and wouldn't leave us alone! In any other country we would have been worried and got out of there ASAP, but this is India, and this is what they do!
We then got our first night train (to Jaisalmer). After our night train experience in Thailand we thought we knew what to expect, but India of course is a little different. The platform changed just before departure and we were both a little wary of our bags as we had heard a few stories of other people's bags disappearing! But after a restless night, with both of us checking from our top bunk that the bags were safe below us (and yes we had locked them!) we arrived in Jaisalmer to a heard of touts trying to get us to their guesthouse!
