So we have begun our travels in Mumbai and after a 3 hour delay from LHR we were really pleased to be met by family at 3.45am local time. Our expectations of being hit by the heat as soon as we got off the plane didn't quite happen, we forgot that it is the end of the rainy season! Our journey to Coloba, where my family live, was full of surprises. The roads are described by the locals to be "like the moon" as the floods in July have meant they are full of pot holes. You'd also expect the streets to be quiet at 4am, but there was no chance, we passed literally hundreds of people walking in the streets with no shoes on, aiming to get to the temple to pray at sunrise.
Being with family has been a real help in finding the local places to book tickets for our onward journey. But even with their help, yesterday was a wild goose chase looking for the local tourist office (the building had recently collapsed!). And today, true to other travellers experiences, it took us 2.5 hours to book our train tickets after being passed from one window to the next.
Mumbai is much more modern than when I was last here 10 yrs ago and the people are really laid back and friendly. What hasn't changed is the constant hum of the traffic and the continual sound of people honking their horns for no reason!
Today was spent on the local double decker buses (where we were the only westerners and I was asked to go back to some lady's house with her!) and looking at the local sights of VT (train station) and the University. The buildings are very British, left over from the days of the Raj.
Tomorrow we are off to Pune to see more family and eat more delicious home cooked curry! Then back to Mumbai before we head to Rajasthan on Saturday am.
