After flying from Solo, Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia we took an overnight sleeper-car train to Singapore, 10 hours away.

Singapore is composed of Chinese (about 75%), Malay (14%), and South Indian (8%), and we were able to visit Buddhist and Hindu temples and Islamic mosques while walking around town. English is widely spoken, as well as Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil.

Singapore is an incredibly clean and orderly city - oversaturated will malls, restaurants, Starbucks and McDonald's. We were pressed to really stick to budget, as prices for everything went up - our hostle room was 59 Singapore dollars ($43 USD! And our last place was $12). The locals pastimes definately include a lot of shopping and dining. Despite all of Singapore's strict rules, we managed not to get caned, or fined (no eating, drinking, smoking, littering, durian .... on the subway or $500 to $1000 fines). In the high-tech and affluent city-state, we saw girls speed texting on cell phones on the subway (which particularly impressed Ernie with their thumb speed skills), many people connected to Ipods

We spent a week in the garden city, enjoying new hi-tech museums, malls, walking tours, great vegetarian Indian food, and beautiful botanic gardens.

Still planning out our India trip - will organize our visas at the next city (need exit flight to get into India).

Happy Holidays to all!
