We were (somewhat) planning to renew our Viet Nam visas for antoher month while in Saigon, but as we were told it would take a week, a hopped a bus for Phnon Penh after two days. Saigon is huge, beautiful, though not as charming as Ha Noi (but we also spent more time in the North). We made ourselves busy tourists in Saigon, visting museums, the Independence Palace, Parks and doing way too much walking ...

The most striking museums for me was the "War Remnants Museum" formerly known something as the War Crimes Museum of America (and China?) Hmm, now changed, I think due to so many American tourists visitng, but the undercurrent ... opops not an undercurrent ... well, this museum is perhaps not for all, but is loaded with much information of the American War, especially the after effects (agent Orange especially) There was also a special exhibit of photography from photojournalists working in Viet Nam during the war - great shots, sad photos and ones to make you quite squeemish and quiet.

Walking around the Independence Palace in city was great. I think things were left mostly as they were prior. The palace was deisgned by a French trainned Vietnamese man in the 1960s - very open spaces, and a gambling and theater too! groovy baby!

As I am writing this two weeks after Saigon, I am sure I am forgetting some great details .. hmm... men yelling at us for moto rides .... schoolchildren in uniform riding bikes home from school to eat lunch at home, flooding the streets ... open air markets with fresh meat and not so fresh smells ... Girls selling copies of books to tourists in the backpacker ghetto ... ok i do remember something...
