Hey, a hotel in Bhutan with internet access! Just quick as they are charging us 5 Nu a minute. Caught the plane to Paro in Bhutan this morning without a hitch, except that Miranda discovered that the combination padlock on one of her bags had reset itself and she couldn't get into it. This was the bag containing presents for our Bhutanese hosts and also all the warm clothing she had brought with her.
Were met at Paro Airport by our guide and driver Phub Dorji and Phub Gyeltshen. We were driven an hour and half to Thimphu, the capital and arrived at our hotel. TV in the bedroom - we couldn't believe it!! We then set about trying all 1000 combinations on the lock, but none of them worked. Just our luck, it was broken. Considered snipping the bag in despair but went to dinner instead.
Downstairs in the lobby we were surprised to met Subarna, our host's husband, and Karma, our guide from our last trip. They insisted on buying us beer (not good on top of the hideous jetlag) and they decided to go and buy a hacksaw blade (at 7.30pm). Went for dinner in a local restaurant, and sure enough Karma turned up with said hacksaw blade and proceeded to saw the offending lock off. As a reward, we finally managed to retrieve our presents for him from the bag. Have to be up at 6.30 tomorrow for a 9-10 hour drive to the centre of Bhutan. Night night (hic).
