A day in Delhi
Entry 2 of 8 | show all | print this entry |
Caught the plane from Heathrow yesterday morning. It was delayed an hour but we arrived in Delhi on time - 11pm local time with a 4 1/2 hour time difference. A slight panic when we thought that Belinda's bag hadn't arrived, but then we found it. We were met at the airport by a car to take us to the hotel and we were tucked up in bed by 2am.
Woke this morning by 9 and had a leisurely morning. Then in the afternoon we took courage in both hands and took a taxi down to Old Delhi. We were hoping to be taken to the Red Fort, but the driver insisted on dropping us off in a street a long way away, and enlisting on our behalf the services of a bicycle rickshaw driver.
We rode in the rickshaw down the packed streets of Old Delhi, the only white faces to be seen. It was an interesting and somewhat exciting experience especially when the driver decided the road was too busy and rode the rickshaw down the other carriageway into the oncoming traffic.
We were relieved to arrive at the Red Fort where we were hijacked by a guide who gave us the lowdown on the History of India from the 11th Century to the present day in detail. The Red Fort, built by an emperor of the Mughal Dynasty, was beautiful and the guide was really good.
Amazingly we got out of the Red Fort without parting with too much money and even more amazingly found our rickshaw driver who returned us to our taxi-driver. He had changed cars in a effort to falsify the meter reading (the meter being cleverly hidden by a cloth). Belin was too clever for him and he was required to reset the meter to zero before we set off again.
At our request he then took us to a carpet shop where we did part with too much money, but hopefully will have a new rug for Miranda's drawing room to show for it (hope that's OK with you, Bill!).
Returned to our hotel room for some pampering - not certain when we will see any hot water again. Delicious meal and now off to bed as we have to fly to Bhutan in the morning.
