The first two days we just spent strolling up and down the beach, doing a little swimming but mostly just relaxing and reading. The 3rd day Ross decided to get all active and learn how to Kite Surf
. We walked around to a few different 'schools' and they each said that it takes about 8 hours to learn the basics. Seeing as though we were leaving the next morning for Taganga, Ross decided he could learn in 4 hours - so we signed him up and off he went! I think it was a little more difficult than he expected and quite tiring to be holding that kite up for 4 hours straight (which is probably why everyone else does 2 hours at a time over the course of a few days). But he did it! And by the end he was able to get himself up there. The waves got to strong at the end and he had to come in but no doubt that with a few more hours he'll be doing flips out there like the rest of them :) We decided to celebrate with room-service since Ross has never treated himself to that before. We just relaxing and watched movies for the rest of the night because the next morning we were getting up early to go to Taganga!
Taganga is a beautiful fishing village about 10min outside of Santa Marta. The ride there was about 4 hours from Cartagena. We ended up taking a collectivo service that picked us up at our hotel and brought us right to our hostel in Taganga. At first we thought the price of the ride was pretty expensive (about $25 each) but then we realized that there are toll roads EVERYWHERE. The driver had to pay close to $100 over the course of the whole trip in taxes just to use certain roads
. And we think our bridge tax is bad! We arrived in Taganga around 1pm and spent the rest of the day hiking around to secluded beaches, enjoying some fresh street juice and trying not to bake in the hot sun. We walked around until the Patriots game was on and then we headed back to the hostel to watch the game with some other travelers. After the Pats one we had a celebratory dinner and then had an early night to get ready to head to Park Tayrona the next day!!
I have so much more to write about our adventure but I am running out of time and will have to update more later.....
Ross came to visit me in Colombia and we had an absolutely amazing time. We did a lot of the same things as I did with my family but you can never have enough time on the beach right? We spent the first few days in Cartagena but we stayed on Playa de Morros which was on a different side of the beach from where I was with my parents. The beach was beautiful and large and after being there during Christmas time it also felt empty. We got to relax at the Holiday Inn due to Ross' 'premier membership' through work - thanks Bond :) We had only planned on staying in Cartagena for 2 days but after seeing how amazing our hotel was and how nice the beach was we immediately extended it for another day.
