You may well think; what have we been doing with ourselves during this long 'stop over' well we’ve been out and about in the surrounding area and have found plenty to occupy us. As we said, we have been to this area before, but there are still new things to see. Not long after we arrived we took ourselves down into San Antonio to the River Walk, it has recently been extended and we were eager to see the new stretch which now reaches the site of the Old Pearl Brewery.

Along the way many local artists have contributed contemporary pieces to lure the visitor to wander onto the next exhibit. We liked some better than others, Malc was particularly taken with the fish that are suspended beneath one of the bridges, hard to believe that each of these is over 7’ long. Almost at the end of the walk way where the river passes under the I-35 (the ‘racetrack’ that joins San Antonio with the State capitol, Austin which is packed with speeding traffic most of the day) a colony of bats have taken up residence. Sadly they are not at home at this time of the year though.

The landscaping along Museum Reach is beautiful and it certainly makes for a very pleasant stroll. The river taxis ply their trade too, but we thought it was much nicer to wander on our own. The brewery is in the process of being renovated, but there are still some really interesting things going on in the vicinity… By the time we had walked this new section of the riverwalk it was beginning to get dark so we stopped at the very intriguing VFW Post 76 for a drink before returning "home"

Another day saw us visiting Gruene a pretty little town full of charm, we had gone to see ‘Cowboy Kringle’ but before his arrival we wandered around a great little craft fair, where we found some very unusual items, but thought they were just amazing, take a look…

I would love to have a go at these, but I don’t think we have a dry enough climate for them, unless I leave them in the airing cupboard for 8 months – which is how long the large ones take to dry out. But ingenious eh? Take a look at her other stuff; wonderful :)

We also took a look inside some of the other stores too, you can as well…

However I did think some of the ‘stuff’ was gross!

We are very happy here at Lazy L&L maybe it’s all in the name! Should it be lazy M&B? But the surroundings are so pretty, the river is low at the moment and the flow is dictated by the amount of water that is released from the dam at Canyon Lake. Despite this we decided to ‘float’ down as hundreds of people do all summer. Rodney our host here rents out toobs – yes that’s what they call the inner tubes they use! And ‘canoes’ – I put them in inverted commas as they are inflatable and have somewhat rigid bottoms with holes in to let the water drain out ???

Well we opted for these and together with another couple we set off, Rodney had said we might be a little chilly – but we certainly weren’t. It was a lovely afternoon; however it wasn’t really a float! Remember my canoeing experience is somewhat limited add that to the fact that the water was very low and I wasn’t very good at helping to steer. Somehow I had lost all sense of left and right, when Malc ‘called’ (you can guess why that’s in inverted commas!) left, I stuck my paddle in on the left side and paddled, which of course took us to the right…and vice versa. I will leave you to imagine the picture. Imagine also the number of times we grounded and got stuck in the shallows or going over the rapids. There would have been some great pictures of the scenery and the many turtles we saw sunning themselves on rocks, but sadly I managed to drop the camera in the water – without realising ‘til much later! We did go back the next day and waded about thinking we might at least dry out the memory card if we found the camera. But we’d done about 5 miles so it could have been anywhere! It was our oldest camera, but nonetheless I am missing it.

Don’t worry though, we have another so there won’t be any let up in the photos :)
