Waterlee state Park
As I chop the ingredients for tonight's salad to go with the pork steaks that we are BBQing over the fire ring I have the TV on - the one channel that we can pick up here. We aren't really bothered about TV but there is a bit of a panic on so we have been tuned in. The Swine flu epidemic is spreading, SC where we are is one of the growing number of states that are reporting confirmed cases, 8 at lunchtime 15 now at 7pm. A private school about maybe 50 miles away in Greenville had sent students to Mexico on a field trip and they have brought the virus back. Fortunately no one has been badly affected though some 51 people are in isolation. It seems that at various times in our travels we have outrun storms, been trapped by hurricanes _ Fay in August in FL and now we have a new strain of flu on our doorstep, the media do seem to sensationalize these stories but you cannot ignore them. The advice is wash your hands and avoid being coughed on or sneezed on! The news is showing people wearing masks, but the theory is that this won't necessarily help as once they are moist they cease to work. Hey ho...the concern is that we are out of touch with home as there is no wifi here so we know that family will be concerned, but we are OK at the moment! We will have wifi tomorrow so we can reassure everyone then. As with many state parks, this one is beautifully kept, we have to leave on Friday though, as it is fully booked for the w/e. State residents get preference - which is as it should be - but we discovered that they are able to book up to 11 months in advance! Campers are allowed to stay something like 49 consecutive days in any 60. We think that things will be much busier at the w/e, the lake is a very popular fishing destination. Come tomorrow the vast parking lot will be full; the water will be packed with craft, fast motor boats and quiet fishermen. We think we have seen it as its best.
It's a lovely peaceful spot, we like to find places like this.
