After a nine hour overnight flight and approximately 30 minutes sleep each, we began our descent into London Heathrow. We had been praying for a dry day in the city but the thick cloud blocking our view of the landscape below was not, to say the least, promising. Kian's first view of London was of the tarmac - we literally couldn't see anything until we were on the ground.
Still, with high spirits, we caught the tube and headed towards the city centre. I was convinced that the weather would improve with time. As we emerged from the underground into Piccadilly Square, it was clear what our next move would have to be - and so we went straight to an umbrella shop.
With wet feet and a slightly dampened spirit, we trekked on to see the sights - Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Westminster, Covent Garden (where we escaped the rain for a well-earned Cornish pasty), and Harrods. Our willpower finally weakened enough and we stumbled into a cozy Kensington pub, got ourselves a couple pints and settled down to a game of Checkers. Which we played until Kian fell asleep. (Which had nothing to do, of course, with the way I beat him at the board game).
And so it was with considerable relief that we settled into our next overnight flight, this time leaving cloudy London with the knowledge that we would be guaranteed warm weather at our next destination!
