Where I stayed

If Salvador had a personality it would be a sexy afro-Brazillian samba dancer.  If Manaus had a personality it would be a stinky hobo who hadn't showered for days. This is a rather dirty and smelly city with rubbish everywhere. Luckily today we leave for Colombia to do our jungle tour in a little outpost town Leticia. We chose for our tour and can't wait.

Rubbish has probably been the worst thing about this continent and also the food. There is a prevalent culture of just throwing rubbish on the ground, in the rivers, in zoo enclosures etc etc and then the poorest of the poor have to sweep it up. We heard about someone going down the Amazon in a ferry and the locals were just throwing all their rubbish into the river with no idea why it's so disgusting. Maybe it's a cultural thing or maybe they are just lazy.

The best local food I had was definitely Bahian cuisine in Salvador. This curry stews of seafood were delicious and relatively cheap to share. Everywhere else the food has been pretty average except for eating in restaurants.  The worst is during transit , bus stops and on airplanes where processed junk food, white bread and random meat is the norm. For days at a time I would pretty much only eat bananas, yogurt and whole meal crackers stubbornly refusing to eat the crap that keeps so many people stupid and overweight. At least there is bananas, delicious cheap bananas everywhere.

Now in the Amazon we have tried river fish (surprisingly fishy tasting) and have stuck to safe western food while we still can. We visited the main market and got some veggies for sandwiches that were ok except we thought we bought tomatoes that turned out tasting like cabbage. We stumbled upon a deli and got almost 1/2 kg of cashews, brazil nuts and macadamias for $6 and they didn't taste old and stale like in Aus.

Goodbye smelly Manaus! Will not miss you.
