Spread across 500 sq km of rock strewn plain the Nazca Lines form a network of over 800 lines, 300 figures and 70 animals and plant drawings. The ancient lines were mostly made by removing the sun darkened stones from the desert to expose the lighter stones below. Nobody knows who made the lines or why but there are a few theories including one which claims the lines are an astronomical calender, another claims that they are extraterestrial landing sites and another is that the lines are representations of Shamans´dreams brought on by hallucinogenic drugs.
The only way the lines can be appreciated is from the air and every tour agency in Nazca knows this and so charge whatever they like for the short flight
25 minutes, a monkey, astronaut, hummingbird and a spider later we were safely back on the ground. It took us most of the day to recover which nearly made the flight not worth it but its the only way to see the lines so it had to be done.
We left Nazca early the next morning for Lima.
